Alaskan Summer Internship : Golf Course Maintenance

The Anchorage Golf Course, Anchorage, Alaska’s premier 18 hole championship golf course is offering 2 summer turf/sports turf/agronomy internships for the 2012 season. AGC is a privately operated and managed 18 hole facility. It is located within the municipal boundaries of the City of Anchorage, AK. in the foothills of the Chugach Mountains. The Anchorage Golf Course is an 18 hole, Par 72 that plays about 6600 yards from the White tees. The facility sits on 320 wooded acres of mostly Paper White Birch and Black Spruce trees with 105 acres of maintained golf turf. The facility has the State of Alaska’s only full grass driving range, a large clubhouse with 2 banquet rooms, pro shop and full food facilities.

Turf: Our Greens are McKenzie/18th green and A-4 bentgrass and Poa annua . Fairways, and Tees are Bluegrass/ryegrass blends and the rough has a mix of fescue also included. The soils in Alaska are very unique and offer a challenge to any agronomist with a high percentage of organics, and glacial silt in place of traditional clay particles in most soils. We also have a high percentage of sand in our profile.

We have a modern maintenance facility with top quality equipment and an aggressive turf management program that strives to make AGC not only the best golf experience in Alaska, but the finest in the whole Pacific Northwest!

-Internship requirements: We are looking for current turf/sports turf or agronomy students in accredited 2 and 4 year college and university programs. Our summer interns will have hands on working and turf management on all of the golf course playing surfaces. The intern will work weekends and regular hours in the normal aspects of course management. You must also want to work in the wild, wide open spaces of the largest environment in North America!

Successful applicants should be hard working and enthusiastic about the profession. If northern turf is your passion, this is a chance to see and work in one of the most unique environments in which you can manage bentgrass and bluegrass turf. We are looking for a 60-90 day commitment and are flexible when the summer will start and finish for you dependent on your school’s class schedules.
