Scholarships in Nursery
Use the Scholarship Application (Due Feburary 1) to apply for the following scholarships offered by the Department of Horticulture and the College of Agricultural Sciences.
Department of Horticulture Scholarships
THE WILBUR W. BURKHART SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is for an undergraduate in horticulture exhibiting financial need.
GROW AND SHOW GARDEN CLUB
One or more awards as funds are made available by the Club. Limited to juniors and seniors in horticulture who show evidence of ability, promise, and need for minimum college expenses.
JACKSON COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS ASSOCIATION
Honors a Jackson County High School graduate who will be a junior, senior, or graduate student to further his or her education in a plant-related field (includes all horticulture options). Requirements: cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Requires two letters of recommendation, one from an instructor, and also an interview (by phone if needed) with the Jackson County Master Gardener Scholarship Committee.
EZRA J. KRAUS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Available to students in ornamental horticulture on the basis of financial need and scholarship.
OREGON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION - JANE KERR PLATT SCHOLARSHIP
Jane Kerr Platt Memorial Awards available to honor Jane Kerr Platt whose garden in west Portland is an extraordinary collection of unusual plant materials. Selection based on academic achievement and financial need, and interest in landscape design, propagation and/or use of native plant materials. Must be a graduate of a U.S. high school.
OREGON FEDERATION OF GARDEN CLUBS – CLAIRE HENLEY SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship for an Oregon resident sophomore or upper division student majoring in production or landscape horticulture. Awarded on the basis of excellence in scholarship, personal qualifications and financial need. U.S. citizenship required.
OREGON MASTER GARDENER ASSOCIATION RAY MCNEILAN SCHOLARSHIP
Awarded to a junior or senior Horticulture major. To receive this award, a junior must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or above, and a senior must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above.
POLK COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS
Awarded to a junior or senior (if none available, to graduate students). Preference for graduates of Polk County High School. If not available, needs to be graduate of Oregon high school in adjacent rural county. Based on financial need and being in good academic standing.
J FRANK SCHMIDT SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship with a preference for students studying ornamental or nursery plants. Based on financial need and academic achievement. Oregon resident.
ARTHUR THOMAS AND LULA MAY MATTHEWS SCHOLARSHIP
An award of varying amount given to a sophomore, junior or senior Horticulture major selected by the Horticulture Department faculty.
College of Agricultural Sciences Scholarships
DON BURLINGHAM SCHOLARSHIP
Based on need, leadership and character.
WAYNE & JOANNE CHAMBERS SCHOLARSHIP
Sophomore that has graduated from an Oregon high school with demonstrated financial need and personal contribution to educational expenses.
JESS HANSON SCHOLARSHIP
For graduates of Oregon's Benton County high schools. Based on need and/or scholastic merit.
URSULA BOLT KNAUS
Based on financial need and 2.5 or better cumulative GPA.
BEN & PHYLLIS NEWELL SCHOLARSHIP
Sophomore student who has demonstrated financial need and personal contribution to education expenses.
DORIS MARDIS TIBBETTS SCHOLARSHIP
Sophomore, Junior or Senior student who is well-rounded in leadership, scholarship and career objectives, minimum 2.5 GPA.
Use the linked application forms in the scholarship descriptions to apply for the following scholarships and determine the application due dates:
AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE
Two annual scholarships in the amount of $1500 will be given to each of two undergraduate students majoring in horticulture at a four-year institution of higher education who meet the criteria listed below.
1. An undergraduate student of any class standing at the time of the application.
2. Registered as full-time student (minimum 10 credit hours) and actively pursuing a degree in horticulture.
3. Excellence in academic and scholastic performance in the major (an area of horticulture) and supporting areas of science.
4. Participation in extracurricular activities, leadership, and research activities relating to horticulture.
5. Participation in university and community service.
6. Demonstrate commitment to the horticulture profession and related career fields.
7. Related horticultural experiences.
Applicants must be nominated by their chair/Department Head in which they are majors, but only one applicant per department may be nominated.
Deadline is February 1.
HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND Application
Awards range from $1000 to $3000. Must be of Hispanic heritage, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have earned at least 15 undergraduate college credits with a minimum GPA of 2.7. Based on financial need and academic achievement.
NATIONAL COUNCIL OF STATE GARDEN CLUBS Application
$3500 awarded to encourage study of horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, conservation, forestry, botany, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental control, city planning, land management and allied subjects. Only one applicant per state; 34 advanced annual scholarships.
OREGON ASSOCIATION OF NURSERIES SCHOLARSHIPS More Information
Several scholarships are offered, with the intent to encourage students to enter into and complete their academic studies in ornamental horticulture, and then to enter the nursery industry as qualified employees of fellow nursery professionals. Personal interviews may be conducted prior to final selection by Oregon Nurserymen's Foundation Committee.
OREGON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Application
Two or more scholarships awarded to undergraduate students in horticulture or related fields. Preference is given to horticulture majors. Recipients selected by the Oregon Horticultural Society Scholarship Committee.
OSU FOLK CLUB – FOR OLDER-THAN-AVERAGE WOMEN SCHOLARSHIP Application
$1800 scholarship awards to women who are U.S. citizens, residents of Benton County, over the age of 25 at application deadline date and who will attend OSU and carry at least 8 credits per term. Principal criteria are financial need and merit.
RUTH ROSE RICHARDSO PARK MEMORIAL AWARD SCHOLARSHIP Application
This $1000 award was established in 1988-89 by the Multnomah Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. It is awarded annually to sophomore and higher students majoring in Horticulture.
SHINODA FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP Application
Majoring in a degree program related to the field of floriculture and intending to work in some area of commercial floriculture in the United States.
TIMOTHY SCOTT WIRTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Application
To provide financial assistance to deserving students from Linn County who are enrolled in the College of Agricultural Sciences at OSU.
