My research focus is on preserving/improving fruit quality, reducing postharvest losses due to physiological disorders and pathological decays, and lengthening marketability of tree fruit with focusing on sweet cherries and European pears through (1) understanding the metabolic and physiological mechanism of fruit eating quality and storability of the existing and new cultivars; (2) developing postharvest chemical/non-chemical treatments and temperature/atmospheric storage and shipping conditions; and (3) improving horticultural practices.

  • Studying mechanism and practical solutions to improve ripening capacity and eating quality of pears.
  • Reducing postharvest losses due to senescence disorders, superficial scald, scuffing, and pathological decays of pears by developing pre/post-harvest technologies. 
  • Studying alternatives to DPA/ethoxyquin for controlling superficial scald.
  • Ensuring arrival quality of sweet cherries in long-distant export markets.
  • Improving postharvest quality of sweet cherries (flavor deterioration, darkening, pitting, splitting, pedicel browning, decay) by developing pre/post-harvest technologies.

Outreach and Extension

The goal of my outreach program is to effectively transfer research-based information and provide expertise concerning postharvest fruit quality and disorders and postharvest technologies to Oregon pear and sweet cherry industries through collaborations with researchers, extension personnels, packers, and growers.
