Community Learning

There are several ways for Oregonians to get involved with research, training, and community service in the Department of Horticulture. This includes certificate programs and our Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) courses. Whether you are a backyard grower or a commercial blueberry grower, there are ways to learn through the Department of Horticulture.

Master Gardener

The Oregon State University Extension Master Gardener™ program educates Oregonians about the art and science of growing and caring for plants. We are in 27 counties across the state, and train thousands of Master Gardener volunteers. OSU Extension Master Gardeners are volunteer educators, neighbors, and on-the-ground researchers who serve their community with solid training in science-based, sustainable gardening and a love of lifelong learning.

Certificate Programs

Our online, instructor-led Permaculture Design Course is an introductory course and a broad survey of the permaculture design system. The course teaches the design process and lays the foundation for a lifelong study and path in permaculture.

 Certificate of Home Horticulture

Grow your gardening knowledge, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener. There are no course prerequisites, although a basic knowledge of plants is helpful.

In this 12-week non-credit program, you will receive the same science-based training that OSU Extension Master Gardener trainees receive in Oregon, moderated by a skilled instructor.

Turfgrass Management Certificate Program

This online turf management certificate program is also great for anyone interested in a profession that deals with lawn care. If you work for a hardware or lawn care store and field customer questions or consult with landscape architects, this course will give you the language, knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

Urban Agriculture Program

In this online urban agriculture series, you won't need a farm or production site to get started. You can apply directly what you learn to your own backyard or limited space area and by the end of the program, you'll have a complete set of plans to grow your own thriving crop!

We will cover the basic steps together and you can ‘rinse and repeat’ with a different crop each time you want to add something to your garden.
